Keeping It Real & Keeping Kids Safe

Speaker of Truth - Trained Mentor

Leaders walk with kids as positive mentors. A Young Life leader will never condone a poor behavior or choice. If the topic is illegal drug or alcohol use, leaders will speak right to it and make clear that such a choice is not God's plan nor is it healthy or legal.

Leaders care about decisions kids make. Life has decisions that lead to good places and those that do not. Quoting one of our adult leaders, “....I’ve met a lot of really successful people in my life and not a single one of them has ever said, ‘I wish I had smoked more pot’.” Young Life leaders will always point to a good decision.

At critical moments, leaders assess a kid or kids around them for danger. If immediate danger is apparent, leaders call 911. Ask around. We have done this. If professional services are warranted, leaders privately connect kids to the Area Director who guides parents and their kids to resources. We have 24/7 staff available to assist and guide in emergency and critical situations.

Do you ever wonder if you are the only parent  with an adolescent who struggles? You are definitely not alone. How do we encourage and drive our kids to aim high even when dreams come true and frankly some off them knock you to the ground repeatedly.  Young Life leaders have been through much of what kids today deal with and they are uniquely called to serve kids to support.

Do You Hear What I Hear?

Young Life Leaders Listen

If you've been a Young Life leader long enough, you will have heard many stories. Alongside the conversations of happiness and success you will have had conversations about suicide, depression, drugs, alcohol, sex, feelings of insignificance in the world at school or at home, pressure to perform, bullies, and social media disasters. For many of our kids, their biggest desire is just to survive.

Kids want help. Just ask a leader. They might not confide in a parent for various reasons or just want an unbiased adult opinion. They desire to confide in a trusted mentor. Young Life leaders walk alongside kids for the sole purpose of making a positive impact while living out their faith and demonstrating to a kid that he or she matters.

If we don't send positive adults into the lives of kids, they draw information from their peers and social media. This is how many kids make choices. Just negotiate a curfew with your teen and you will learn quickly that most teens will have already assembled a well researched plan from their own or their friends’ point of view. From habits to disciplines to tennis shoes, kids model those around them whether we like it or not.

What’s a Young Life Leader?

Generous Provider and Builder

A Young Life leader’s main role is to build an authentic relationship and model faith lived out with high school and junior high students. Leaders are caring adults that want to help students become the best versions of themselves. Leaders participate in and lead weekly Club and possibly Campaigner (small group) meetings. Young Life leaders log many hours with kids — where they are, as they are, on their turf. They listen to their stories and learn what's important to them because they genuinely care about their joys, triumphs, heartaches and setbacks. The choices kids make today, impact their future. We hope to guide by word and action helping all kids we meet along the way.

Thessalonians 2:8 “We loved you so much that we were delighted to share with you not only the gospel of God but our lives as well, because you had become so dear to us.”
